The Lewis Peat Calendar 2008
*The Lewis Peat Calendar has now SOLD OUT*
The total amount raised for Leukaemia Research is £21,645.28!
Many thanks to all those who bought the calendar and donated, and to those who helped publicise it!
The Lewis Peat Calendar 2008 has been produced to help raise funds for Leukaemia Research and shows the various stages of the traditional peatcutting process on Lewis, carried out in slightly unusual attire by some of the local worthies. Spare a thought for these gents, who bared (almost) all for charity during an unusually chilly summer...
Illustrated with captioned black-and-white photographs, the calendar is A4 size (11.75 x 8.25 inches), spiral bound and is printed on high-quality semi-gloss paper. It is available now in various outlets in Lewis, or by post from the address near the bottom of this page, with all proceeds going to Leukaemia Research.
The idea for the calendar came from Gress resident Jock Murray, who says:
"The problem when one retires is finding something to do. Eventually, I came up with this idea to raise money for Leukaemia Research in Glasgow, where a member of my family is being treated for this illness. I couldn't have chosen a more controversial way of doing this, especially on the Isle of Lewis, but I love a challenge!
I chose an interesting theme that many of our current generation know little about. It will also remind others, especially those who have left the island, of the hard work one had to put in to gather fuel for the long winter months.
I hope people will buy the calendar with a smile on their face: so far, those who have seen the end product have certainly laughed, but time will tell whether I achieve what I set out to do, i.e., raise money for this very worthwhile charity.
The calendar is priced at just £5.00 plus postage. Before we make any profit towards the charity, we have to sell at least 280 calendars, so any extra donations would be gratefully accepted.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all, in anticipation...
Kind regards, John "Jock" Murray, Gress."
Thank you for your interest and support!
