Scottish Opera recently visited the Isle of Lewis as part of a 17-date tour of the country, performing Donizetti’s comic opera L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) to a very appreciative audience in An Lanntair’s arts centre in Stornoway.
I accompanied the cast and crew on a trip to the West Side of Lewis / Callanish Stones before their evening performance, and some of my images were used in an article in Opera Now magazine.

The refurbished Lews Castle and the new Museum and Archive in Stornoway are both now open to the public. The brochure published by Natural Retreats, who run the Castle, contains 29 of my photographs.

Museum nan Eilean’s new base in Stornoway, connected to the newly refurbished Lews Castle, will be opening its doors to the public on Thursday, 14th July. Displays in the new museum will include photographic exhibitions, many archaeological finds, Viking silver hoards and six of the world famous Lewis Chess pieces discovered in Uig, Isle of Lewis in 1831.
John MacLean Photography is pleased to have been involved in photographing the Museum and Castle extensively during its construction/refurbishment, and wishes all involved in this amazing project best wishes and success for the future.
Very busy on framing work the past couple of weeks. The latest one off the bench is to be a wedding present: a lovely panoramic James Smith print of a Ness sunset, framed in a wide deep-rebate obeche frame finished with three coats of Danish oil.
If you’re looking to have anything framed, whether for yourself or as a distinctive and unique gift for someone else, just get in touch. Services range from mounting only of prints to contract framing and bespoke framing of large works.
Looking forward to photographing An Lanntair’s Faclan Book Festival for the fifth year in a row.
This year’s theme is Blood and the festival takes place from 28th to 31st October.
A set of photos taken around the Castle grounds, harbour and streets of Stornoway during the Hebridean Celtic Festival in July 2015 is now on the John MacLean Photography Facebook page.
Please like and share the page: new photos are added regularly, including many which don’t appear on this website. Thanks!
Just back from an enjoyable and sunny trip to South Uist, where I was photographing Lochboisdale Cafe, surely the most colourfully painted business premises in the Hebrides!
Very friendly and helpful staff, homemade cakes, soup and fresh coffee, with internet access and a post office service in the same building, make this an excellent stop when in Lochboisdale.

Ihave acquired some new equipment recently for more specialised panoramic work where very wide-view photographs are required (or even 360 degree panoramics, for use as VR quicktime files).
Contact me for more details if you need this kind of work carried out.

Amazingly, An Lanntair in Stornoway is 30 years old this year. I still remember a couple of the photos I showed in the first Grinneas open exhibition in 1985, in its original location in Stornoway Town Hall.
Grinneas still soldiers on annually, and this year’s exhibition opening (and 30th anniversary celebration) takes place on the evening of 28th February.
